It is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/experts-90-online-content-ai-generated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consensus among researchers tracking synthetic content volumes<\/a>, and it was one of the central claims made during the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ont.io\/news\/privacy-data-and-the-future-of-ai-data\/\">Ontology Privacy Hour<\/a>\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Juliun_b\">Juliun<\/a>, who works on content provenance tooling with artists and studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this point forward, the majority of new text, images, audio and video appearing online will be generated by AI. Humans will still create, but they will be outpaced, permanently, by machines that can produce content faster, cheaper and at a scale no workforce can match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not just a curiosity. It changes the fundamentals of how we think about data, privacy, identity and trust online. And it makes the infrastructure that can distinguish human from synthetic, and that can anchor trust to a real person, more important than it has ever been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What peak human content actually means<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The volume of AI-generated content has been growing exponentially. Large language models, image generators, video synthesis tools and voice cloning systems are all improving in quality while dropping in cost. The barrier to producing synthetic content at scale is effectively zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is predictable. Estimates suggest that\u00a0by 2026, over 90% of new online content will be synthetically generated. Social media feeds, product reviews, news commentary, forum posts, even academic papers: the default assumption for any piece of content encountered online is increasingly that it was not made by a human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a failure of moderation or platform policy. It is a structural shift. The economics of content production have changed permanently. A single person with access to an API can generate more text in an afternoon than a newsroom produces in a year. The question is no longer whether synthetic content will dominate. It already does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The privacy inversion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is where the argument takes a counterintuitive turn. The only thing that needs to truly be secured and authenticated is when I choose to say this is mine.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a genuine inversion of how we have thought about privacy for the past two decades. The traditional model assumed that your data was identifiable and needed to be locked away, encrypted, access-controlled, deleted on request. The new model suggests that the data itself is becoming worthless as an identifier. What carries value is the moment you attach your verified self to a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Privacy, in this framing, is not about hiding data. It is about controlling attribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attribution becomes the product<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If data is noise and identity is signal, then attribution is not just a nice-to-have. It is the entire product. Juliun illustrated this with a simple example. If&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>&nbsp;publishes a stock price, that information carries weight because Bloomberg said it. If an anonymous account posts the same number on a forum, it carries almost none. The data is identical. The source is everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Push this logic further and a compelling model emerges. In a world saturated with synthetic content, publishers and creators do not need to protect their raw output. They need to protect the moment they stamp something with their name. The signal, the attribution, the verifiable link between a piece of content and a trusted source: that is where all the value concentrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta reportedly pays artists up to $500,000 a day to produce 3D models for training data, precisely because they cannot distinguish authentic human work from synthetic output in their existing datasets. As Juliun described during the Privacy Hour: &#8220;They&#8217;re like, how do you find real? It&#8217;s all, I don&#8217;t know if this is real or not, I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s good or not, so might as well just pay people to make it.&#8221; The scarcity of provably human content is already creating real economic value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The training data Ouroboros<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a second-order consequence here that matters enormously. AI models trained on AI-generated content degrade. This is not speculation; it is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2305.17493\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented phenomenon called model collapse<\/a>, where successive generations of models trained on synthetic data lose diversity, accuracy and coherence. Training on your own output is an Ouroboros: the snake eating its own tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates an urgent demand for authentic human data. This is where blockchain infrastructure becomes critical: anchoring provenance on-chain creates a permanent, immutable link between content and its origin that cannot be detached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means for identity infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If attribution is the asset and provenance is the mechanism, then the infrastructure that makes both possible is the foundation. If human-generated content is becoming scarce, and if verified human attribution is becoming valuable, then the economic power is shifting back toward individuals. Not toward platforms, not toward model providers, but toward the people who can prove they are real and that their work is theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not unlike the shift that happened with analogue goods in a digital world. Vinyl records, handmade furniture, film photography: when digital reproduction made everything infinitely copyable, the premium on the authentic original went up, not down. The same dynamic is playing out with content and data, but at a much larger scale and with much higher stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The infrastructure that enables this, verifiable identity, on-chain provenance, user-controlled attribution, is what turns the optimism into something practical. Without it, the human premium is just a nice idea. With it, it becomes an economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where this goes next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Peak human content is a threshold, not an event. We will not wake up one morning to find the internet has flipped. It is a gradual shift, and for the most part, it has already happened. The question now is whether we build the infrastructure to navigate the world that follows, or whether we let the same centralised actors who profited from the data economy profit from its replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ontology is building for the second option.
